Gun Violence Prevention Bill Passes in Senate:

Last night, the Senate passed a gun violence prevention package called the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act by a vote of 65-33. The bill will now move to the House where it is expected to pass and then be signed into law by President Biden. This is the first gun safety bill to advance in 30 years. ASPPH leadership sent a letter to the Senate urging quick passage of the bill. Additionally, ASPPH spearheaded a letter to congressional leaders a letter joined by several health professions organizations within the Federations of Associations of Schools and Programs of Health Professions (FASHP) requesting swift action on the bill. The bipartisan gun violence package would provide solutions to factors that lead to gun violence, including expanded mental health services, age-appropriate restrictions on gun purchases, state incentives to implement red flag laws, and gun purchase restrictions and penalties for individuals with criminal records.
